News Vernissage "World art from Tanzania - more than Tingatinga" in Munich

On October 9, 2025, the vernissage opening “World Art from Tanzania – More than Tingatinga” took place at the St. Galler Kantonalbank in Munich. The exhibition features works by 24 Tanzanian artists, presenting over 40 pieces that showcased the impressive diversity and expressive power of contemporary art from the country.
As the Urbis Foundation, we are very pleased to support this exhibition. Tanzania has been a central partner in our foundation’s work in Southern Africa for many years, and the exhibition reflects the close cultural connection that has developed through this long-standing collaboration. The works on display vividly demonstrate how rooted Tanzanian art is today in its themes, forms, and techniques, while at the same time remaining open to international influences.
A special highlight of the evening was the lecture by Mr. Gleiß, who provided fascinating insights into the development of Tanzanian art. He emphasized that the internationally known Tingatinga painting – often perceived as a symbol of Tanzanian art – is primarily a popular, tourist-oriented form of expression. The works featured in the exhibition, however, show that the true diversity of Tanzanian art goes far beyond this: combining traditional influences with contemporary perspectives and societal reflection.
The vernissage opening offered inspiring encounters, lively discussions, and new perspectives on a country whose art is as dynamic and diverse as its people. We warmly thank all participants and guests for this successful evening and for their interest in Tanzanian art and culture.
The exhibition “World Art from Tanzania – More than Tingatinga” will be on view at the St. Galler Kantonalbank in Munich until December 23, 2025.
All interested visitors are warmly invited to explore the works – all exhibited artworks are also available for purchase.
