News Successful completion of the Sun4Water project - solar irrigation for sustainable agriculture in Togo

Practical training for farmers on solar irrigation by CPIA experts from the Urbis Foundation.

As part of the Sun4Water project, two hands-on training sessions on solar-powered irrigation systems (SPIS – Systèmes de Pompage à l’Irrigation Solaire) were conducted at the Centre de Promotion des Initiatives Agricoles (CPIA) – including during the past two months. A total of 40 farmers, among them young agro-entrepreneurs and vocational school graduates, participated in the trainings.

The background: more than 240 million people in Sub-Saharan Africa are affected by food insecurity, while around 80 percent of the population depends on rain-fed agriculture. In times of increasing droughts, irregular rainfall, and extreme weather events, this poses a growing threat to the livelihoods of many smallholder farmers.

Solar-powered irrigation systems (SPIS) offer a sustainable solution. They provide reliable access to water and energy, increase agricultural productivity, and play a crucial role in supporting adaptation to climate change.

During the two training sessions held in June and September 2025, participants learned about the structure and functioning of SPIS, explored various irrigation methods—such as drip, sprinkler, and perforated tape systems—and gained practical skills in maintenance and repair. In addition, digital tools for data collection and system analysis were introduced. Led by experienced CPIA specialists, the practice-oriented sessions offered participants numerous opportunities to apply their knowledge directly in the field—from installation to troubleshooting.

All participants rated the trainings as very useful and reported significant improvements in their knowledge and skills. The hands-on approach was particularly appreciated, ensuring that the acquired expertise remains anchored in the communities over the long term.

With the completion of the Sun4Water project, a successful phase of collaboration with the GIZ comes to an end. However, the Urbis Foundation continues its commitment to promoting sustainable irrigation and green energy solutions in Togo.
