News The Future of Agriculture in Togo: Networking, Training, and Prospects
As part of the ASA 2025 program, two students, in collaboration with the Urbis Foundation Togo, visited farms in the Central Region, collected and analyzed data to strengthen training for young people and connect the farms with one another.
A central component of the work was farm visits and interviews, during which the farms’ working methods, resources, capacities, and specializations were documented. Based on this, farm profiles were created, a networking day for farm managers was organized, and a concept for the further development of the CPIA training farm was developed.
The project enabled the students to gain practical experience at external farms in areas such as vegetable cultivation, animal husbandry, beekeeping, and the processing of agricultural products. At the same time, a foundation for networking was established to increase the efficiency and cooperation among the farms.
The hands-on work at the CPIA farm and the on-site visits clearly demonstrated that agriculture in Togo remains heavily labor-intensive, yet there is significant potential for networking, knowledge transfer, and practical training. The networking day provided farm managers with the opportunity to exchange experiences and discuss current topics such as sustainable water use and regional marketing of organic products.
Based on the data collected, 18 farms were successfully networked with one another. Recommendations were developed for the further development of the CPIA farm, for improving the water supply, and for the processing of agricultural products. The project illustrates how targeted training, practical support, and cooperation strengthen the prospects of young people while simultaneously promoting the development of sustainable agriculture.
