News Project Update: Successful Solar Installations in Kisumu Boost Education and Sustainable Energy Supply

Installation of the solar power system at the Make Me Smile Kenya training center.

In March 2026, as part of a project funded by the URBIS Foundation, two solar power systems were successfully installed and commissioned in Kisumu, Kenya. In close collaboration with Make Me Smile Kenya and the solar company SOLAERA, a project was implemented that combines sustainable energy supply with hands-on training.

A 12-kW system was installed at the Make Me Smile Vocational Training Centre, and a 5-kW system was installed at the Tom Mboya Office. Both systems have been fully operational since commissioning and contribute significantly to a reliable and sustainable energy supply for the sites. At the same time, they reduce dependence on the public power grid and lower energy costs in the long term.

A key focus of the project was on providing hands-on training for young people. Trainees were actively involved in all phases of the installation—from assembling the solar modules and wiring to commissioning the systems. Of particular note is the targeted inclusion of women, who were able to gain valuable practical experience in the field of solar energy through the project.

By combining infrastructure development with skills training, the project makes an important contribution to the development of skilled workers in the renewable energy sector in East Africa. It serves as an exemplary model of how sustainable energy projects and vocational training can be successfully linked.

The URBIS Foundation is pleased to contribute, together with its partners, to the promotion of sustainable development, technical training, and equal opportunity.
